Many people are looking for alternative ways to stay healthy and fend off a cold naturally and without the use of over the counter medications.  Amanda Diamond shares her routine for avoiding sickness.

Everyone that I came into contact with last week was sick…

With the frigid temperatures this time of year it’s no wonder people’s immune systems are having a hard time keeping up. Though I have done a great job of staying “bug” free this winter the reality is a person can’t stay bulletproof forever.

I awoke Saturday morning with that all too familiar ache in the back of my throat, and I knew that I had to act quickly if I wanted to avoid a full-fledged cold/flu…because let’s be honest, busy moms don’t have time for colds!

DON'T QUIT

Here is my go-to routine for avoiding sickness:

1. Oil Pulling - Oil pulling consists of placing a tablespoon of cold pressed organic sesame oil into the mouth and swishing the oil around the mouth for approximately 10-15 minutes and then spitting it out. Not only can oil pulling improve overall oral health but it can also remove harmful bacteria from the mouth, teeth, gums and even throat.

2. Hot honey, lemon and ginger – I start my day by drinking a tall mug of hot water with a wedge of organic lemon, a Tbsp of raw honey, (Manuka Honey is best) and a few slices of fresh ginger root. I also add a little bit of coconut oil. This magical mixture relieves inflammation, thins mucus, soothes and lubricates the throat, promotes detoxification and even helps to fight off bacterial infections and viruses. I drink it several times throughout the day.

3. Essential Oil Inhalations – This is an easy yet very effective technique stopping bacteria and viruses in their tracks. Eucalyptus and menthol essential oils work as a decongestant, expectorant and can even help kill the infection for both colds and flu. You can inhale them by simply dropping a few drops of each oil into your hands, rubbing them together vigorously and then placing them over your mouth and nose while breathing in. Just be sure not to touch your eyes in the process.

4. Detox Baths - Simply adding a few key ingredients to your evening bath can greatly increase your body’s detoxification process, sooth sore muscles and improve sleep quality. Add 2 cups Epsom salt, 1 cup baking soda and a few drops of lavender essential oil to a hot bath and soak for 20 mins. Do not use products containing harsh chemicals, as your open pores will easily absorb them. After soaking, rinse off with cool water.

Incorporating these techniques for 1-2 days should be enough to keep the bad bugs at bay. Above all ensure that you stay hydrated and get as much rest as possible. Listen to your body’s queues to slow down and take care of yourself and you’ll certainly be glad you did.

  1. Matcha Green Tea has really boosted my immunity. I am an independent tea consultant and have done extensive research on this food. I have not been sick with cold or flu since drinking it.
