Awards season brings a lot of people together to watch the glitz and the glamour of Hollywood.  People talk at work, on social media and at parties about what picture they think should win best picture.

There are one or two really great movies nominated for best picture this year and I'm definitely going to try and watch them.   I love a good movie that gives you an escape, but I also love movies that make think, teach me something, and hopefully inspire me to make changes in my life.

So, with that in mind, here, in no particular order, are my 5 nominations for Best Picture in the category of "Food and what it does for and to your body"

FOOD DOCUMENTARIES

Food Inc.

Made by documentary filmmaker Robert Kenner, this movie shows how huge multinational corporations have taken over all aspects of the food chain in the United States, starting with the farms where our food is grown to the chain restaurants and supermarkets where it's sold. Narrated by author and activist Eric Schlosser, the film features interviews with average Americans about their dietary habits, commentary from food experts like Michael Pollan and unsettling footage shot inside large-scale animal processing plants.

Fed Up

Filmmaker Stephanie Soechtig and journalist Katie Couric investigate how the American food industry may be responsible for more sickness than previously realized.

Genetic Roulette

I watched this movie after graduating as a Nutritionist.  Even knowing what I did, I still cried when watching it.   Based on the book of the same name, Jeffrey Smith explores the connection between genetic modification of our foods, pesticides and our health.

Vegucated

I'm not trying to convert anyone to veganism, however, this movie really shows how healthy a plant based diet can be for you.  Vegucated is a guerrilla-style documentary that follows three meat- and cheese-loving New Yorkers who agree to adopt a vegan diet for six weeks and learn what it's all about.

Farmageddon

Another movie that looks at how government controls our food and the lengths they will go to, to protect corporate interests.

While these are my top 5, there are many more excellent movies out there that I definitely recommend.  Some of the top 5 above, can be found full length version on You Tube to stream for free.  Some can be found on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon for a small fee.  Check your local library also for copies of these fascinating documentaries.

  1. I Love this list! I’ve seen all but Generic Roulette and after reading this Ill be checking to see if I can watch while I’m traveling tomorrow. These and various other food documentaries have really opened up my eyes to different food based problems, solutions, and ways of eating. Thank you for sharing these! <3

  2. Love this! I haven’t watched all of these, but the last one I watched was Bought and I loved it! I’m definitely merging your list with my own! Thanks so much!

  3. Thanks for sharing these great movie reviews! I’m with you, I’d rather watch something educational, thoughtful, and something that will make me think than watch the lastest glitz. I really appreciate your recommendations.

  4. I have not seen them all but I would have to say Food Inc. and Vegucated are two that I really enjoyed. Thank you for the list in addition. I will certainly look up some and watch!

  5. Great list! I haven’t seen all these films, but the ones I have I’d definitely agree with you on. Thank you for reminding me – I have Genetic Roulette sitting here unwatched. And, I’m going to check out the free screening of ‘Bought.

Seeing as I’m not American and don’t live in the states, I’d love to know how much of the info in these films is applicable to the rest of us. I’d love to think some other countries aren’t as messed up, but that could just be wishful thinking!

    1. Glad you liked the list! I live in Canada, and while I don’t think some of the things are AS bad, I believe that things aren’t as perfect as we’re led to believe.

Let me know what you think of Bought after you’ve watched it!

  6. Genetic Roulette is my pick. I have been railing against this for quite a while. It is so scary how and where our food is actually coming from.

I look forward to watching all of the top 5 on your list and also the ones that didn’t make the top 5 list. Thank you for this.
